Embracing Life Through Art and Inspiration.

Jean-Philippe "Jip" Couderc is a French-American artist whose work use the discipline and visual language of classical art to explore quiet contemporary concerns. Rather than stating the message directly, he builds it through gesture, symbolism, atmosphere, and the relationship between the figures.

picture profile of the artist

I find immense joy in the beauty of life and the creative process. Born in Lyon, France, and now living in New York State, I’ve always been inspired by the richness of human expression and the world around me. For me, art is a way to pause and appreciate the simple yet profound moments that make life extraordinary.

Over the years, I’ve immersed myself in painting and drawing, not just as a pursuit but as a way of connecting with others and celebrating the world’s inherent beauty. I’ve been fortunate to showcase my work in exhibitions in New-York including New-York City (Salmagundi), and across the US. (Connecticut, Georgia, and various places and galleries) and in Europe.

My journey has also allowed me to learn from exceptional mentors, including Steve Carpenter (Rochester, NY), Simona Moritz (FAA, Florence, Italy), and Tommy Boureau (ADG, Florence, Italy). These experiences have enriched my approach, encouraging me to explore techniques in charcoal, oil, and pastels.

I am currently a student at the Florence Academy of Art in the Advanced Drawing and Painting Program. To me, life and art are inseparable, they both invite us to slow down, reflect, and find meaning in the everyday. Through my work, I hope to share that sense of wonder and discovery with others.

Artistic Statement

My practice is rooted in classical drawing and painting, where observation, discipline, and craftsmanship become ways of understanding the human experience. I am drawn to the enduring beauty of the figure and to the ability of traditional techniques to express ideas that remain deeply relevant today.

Through gesture, light, composition, and symbolism, I explore the quiet tensions beneath ordinary appearances: strength and vulnerability, permanence and change, beauty and imperfection. My intention is not to impose a message, but to create space for contemplation. The meaning of each work reveals itself gradually, inviting viewers to bring their own memories and experiences into the encounter.

I see classical art not as a return to the past, but as a living visual language. By bringing its discipline into conversation with contemporary concerns, I aim to create work that feels timeless yet connected to the present, work that rewards careful looking and encourages a more attentive relationship with ourselves, with others, and with the world around us.
